Useless Cowards is a miniature wargame in which players take on the roles of condottieri captains and lead their armies on the battlefield. This ruleset includes rules and army lists for warfare on the Italian peninsula, beginning with the arrival of foreign companies in the mid-14th century and ending in the early 16th century, when gunpowder weapons began to dominate the battlefield.
In Useless Cowards, battles do not begin only when armies are deployed on the battlefield, but already in the camps, where winning strategies are chosen. Terrain setup rules give generals the opportunity to secure the most advantageous positions from which to challenge the enemy. Before deploying their armies, players may choose from different battle strategies, representing the Captain General’s pre-battle decisions.
The rules are designed for 28 mm miniatures, but players may also adapt them to other scales. Armies are composed of units, each containing roughly 5–30 soldiers. A typical game army consists of 5–8 units. The rulebook also includes campaign rules, including the personal development of the condottiere. These rules are designed to appeal to all types of wargamers, from dedicated tournament players to those who enjoy historical re-fights, as well as everyone in between.
